Today's Highlight: Sri Lanka's New Political Era
Sri Lanka has entered a new chapter following the recent parliamentary elections held on November 14, 2024. The National People’s Power (NPP) coalition, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, achieved a historic landslide victory, winning 159 out of 225 seats. This marks the first time since 1977 that a single party secured such a dominant majority. This election also set a record with 21 female MPs, the highest representation of women in Sri Lankan parliamentary history.
President Dissanayake, who assumed office in September 2024, has focused on economic recovery and equitable implementation of Sri Lanka’s IMF bailout deal. His leadership has been welcomed by both domestic voters and international allies, such as India and China, for its reformist approach. Under his administration, the government has committed to alleviating austerity measures while fostering political and economic reforms to address decades of corruption and mismanagement
